Darragh McCullough: Some farmers are as bad as the worst leafy south Dublin NIMBYs for fighting against the common good

Greenways are a rip-roaring success that do so much for some of Ireland’s most rural areas – and they shouldn’t be halted by landowners desperate to protect their precious patch of the planet

'Greenways provide a real boon for localities that have usually been by-passed by tourism and economic opportunity'

Darragh McCullough

I took a day out from the farm to visit Ireland’s newest greenway last week. The Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway links my county Meath with Cavan. The 32km greenway was the brainchild of Nobber farmer and local councillor, Eugene Cassidy.

Up until 2001, freight trains ran along the line with ore for local industry. Eugene knew that if local farmers and property owners established squatter’s rights on the line after 12 years, it would be a nightmare to reclaim it for the public good.
