Sinn Féin candidates running in north and northwest Cork areas are aiming to “cause a stir” in the upcoming elections on June 7.

The political party has announced that Millstreet mechanic John O’Sullivan will run in the Macroom LEA and Charleville community worker Evelyn O’Keeffe will run in the Kanturk-Mallow LEA this summer.

Mr O’Sullivan, who is a father of four, said that given his trade he regularly sees the damage caused to vehicles due to the poor conditions of local roads. He said he would prioritise investing in and maintaining rural routes if elected.

The candidate said he would also bring traffic calming measures to towns, support local businesses and advocate for timely access to GP, mental health and dental services locally.

“It is time for change now. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have been in power for far too long. Change starts locally and by electing a strong team of Sinn Féin councillors onto Cork County Council, we can ensure that your council delivers decent local facilities and amenities.”

Mrs O’Keefe, who is a Charleville resident and mother of two adult daughters, said she would prioritise pedestrian safety in towns and villages and invest in infrastructure and affordable and accessible public transport if elected.

The candidate said that she would also work to increase awareness of local history and heritage.
